The Ten Countries That Offer the Best Work-Life Balance for Expats

We all dream of the perfect work-life balance. Certain cultures and countries do a better job of creating and fostering it than others. InterNations, the world’s largest network for people who live and work abroad, recently conducted a survey to determine which countries provide the best work-life balance for expats. Among the questions asked of participants were their average number of work hours per week; their satisfaction with their work-life balance; and their satisfaction with their working hours.

After gathering information from 13,000 people in 188 countries, it was found that Denmark, often touted as the happiest country in the world, is the best country for work-life balance. The full results are as follows:

1. Denmark
Average full-time working hours: 39.7 hours
Satisfaction with their working hours: 82%
Satisfaction with their work-life balance: 76%

2. Bahrain
Average full-time working hours: 42.9 hours
Satisfaction with their working hours: 72%
Satisfaction with their work-life balance: 69%

3. Norway
Average full-time working hours: 42.9 hours
Satisfaction with their working hours: 77%
Satisfaction with their work-life balance: 72%

4. The Czech Republic
Average full-time working hours: 44.9 hours
Satisfaction with their working hours: 76%
Satisfaction with their work-life balance: 73%

5. New Zealand
Average full-time working hours: 42.3 hours
Satisfaction with their working hours: 75%
Satisfaction with their work-life balance: 75%

6. Sweden
Average full-time working hours: 42.3 hours
Satisfaction with their working hours: 77%
Satisfaction with their work-life balance: 69%

7. Costa Rica
Average full-time working hours: 44.3 hours
Satisfaction with their working hours: 63%
Satisfaction with their work-life balance: 68%

8. The Netherlands
Average full-time working hours: 42 hours
Satisfaction with their working hours: 76%
Satisfaction with their work-life balance: 75%

9. Oman
Average full-time working hours: 43.5 hours
Satisfaction with their working hours: 70%
Satisfaction with their work-life balance: 67%

10. Malta
Average full-time working hours: 43.9 hours
Satisfaction with their working hours: 67%
Satisfaction with their work-life balance: 72%
