Job searches and job applications have changed dramatically in the digital age. Job portals, social media, websites, webcams, applicant tracking systems and more have presented ever-changing issues for job candidates.

Resumés and CVs are evolving too. Some job applicants are using video resumés to stand out from competitors. Some companies are even requiring them as part of the application process.

Boost your confidence by focusing on the basic foundational elements for creating a video resumé/CV.

Resumé / CV Guidelines

Video Resumé

Some companies are requiring applicants to submit video resumés. These are short videos (30 seconds to 2 minutes) that are sent along with cover letters and traditional resumés. Their main purpose is to introduce you to the employer. Use it to highlight an important skill and/or accomplishment, or introduce a skill, hobby or interest not included in your resumé. Even if a video resumé is not required, it may be a great way for you to stand out from other applicants.

Tips for a Successful Video Resumé

  1. If an employer requires a video resumé, review the guidelines on content, length, editing or submission.
  2. If you’re creating the video on your own, decide on the content. Will you include action shots, or sit in front of the camera and speak? Do you want to add other visuals such as infographics or photographs?
  3. Write a script to be clear about what you want to say.
  4. Prepare your filming space to reflect your content: will you need props; certain equipment; a neutral background?
  5. Dress professionally.
  6. Edit your video using editing software or a video-editing app.
  7. Ask a friend, colleague or mentor to review your video resumé.
